Anyone can experience this directly with a rainbow, because in this celestial phenomenon the sunlight is split into its spectral colors. As an observer, you look at a rain front with the sun behind you. The light of the sun is reflected in the rain droplets and refracted to varying degrees depending on the wavelength. The arc always forms in a characteristic size, because only these rays of light from the sun, split into their colors, reach our eyes.
