Meteors are nothing more than shooting stars, i.e. cosmic rock or dust particles that burn up in the Earth's atmosphere or, in the case of larger bodies, light up (fireballs).
Whenever a larger body, also called a meteoroid, makes its way to the ground without burning up completely, it is called a meteorite
Meteors or shooting stars are most often seen when the Earth moves through a field of dust particles on its orbit around the sun and the famous shooting star showers such as the Perseids, the Orionids or other meteor showers become visible.
