Thomas Grunge, May 10/11, 2024
During May 7-9, 2024, there were many strong CMEs fired toward Earth from the Sun. That's why we were able to see the northern lights in Germany on the night of May 10th to 11th, 2024 under a clear night sky. It is rare that the northern lights can be seen with the naked eye. In the 2000s, I was able to see the northern lights with my own eyes during the International Telescope Meeting in Stumpertenrod (ITV) at the campsite. There are several websites on the Internet that predict the intensity of the northern lights. I use https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ .
At around 9:00 p.m. on May 10th, 2024, I simply placed an Allsky camera in the garden and had it recorded overnight. The best of the approximately 800 photos are shown here. At the same time, I observed the Northern Lights with my naked eyes.
In addition to the recordings, a ketogram was created. The keogram is the sequence of the middle pixel columns from each individual image and thus shows the sky quality and sky brightness throughout the night.
In addition, a time lapse was created.
Overall, the night of May 10th to 11th was a special experience. Our sun not only warms us during the day, but sometimes also offers a great spectacle at night.
